Position: Log Buyer
Reports to: VP Finance

OVERVIEW
The Log Buyer plays a key role in the organization by procuring raw materials that support the needs of production and other assigned areas or departments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Log Procurement:
- Purchase all logs for use at the Carney, MI sawmill and Seymour, WI firewood operations.
- Negotiate competitive pricing and delivery terms with suppliers, ensuring best cost & quality.
- Review quality of logs purchased daily.
- Study market prices and trends. Advise Operations and Finance teams of changing market trends, opportunities, and threats.
Supplier Management:
- Network, establish, and build relationships with suppliers to continually increase supplier base.
- Manage supplier relationships, providing support and correspondence to issues, questions, and opportunities.
- Attend logging congress and other related logging events.
Material Management:
- Manages log inventory and yard layout with Production Managers.
- Establish seasonal Min/Max levels of individual log types.
- Work with Production Managers to ensure proper inventory turnover on a LIFO (last in, first out) basis.
- Participate in monthly physical inventory counts in accordance with accounting procedures.
- Works with the Production Managers & Supervisors to target production and yield goals.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS to perform the Materials Manager job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.
- Education & Experience
- Associate’s degree from 2 Year College or equivalent experience.
- Communication Skills
- Ability to read & interpret documents such safety rules, instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively present data before groups of employees.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Mathematical Skills
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.
- Computer Skills
- Knowledgeable in the use of computers, including the ability to enter information into Microsoft Excel, use Microsoft Word, and other programs as required.
- Reasoning Ability
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
